Synopsis:
Only a half-hour drive separates the ultra-Orthodox suburb of Bnei Brak from secular Tel Aviv. Yet, to the women going there, “The Kosher Beach,” a gated and secluded 100-meter strip separated from the gay beach by just a wooden fence, it is light years away. On different days, women and men go to swim and sunbathe at the world’s only same-sex beach. Three times a week, rain or shine, an international group of Orthodox women gather for a much-needed respite from their day-to-day social and family problems. Here they can be themselves, take a deep ocean breath and open their hearts to the sea. The women listen as their rabbis speak out against the immorality of the beach (for its proximity to secular life), but still consider their excursions “holy.” When the rabbis try to close the beach, what will the women do? Will they give in, or will they fight?
